It is impossible to discuss all the computer problems and the registry hives that need to be restored. The most common registry problem is created by installation of a bad or incompatible driver, or another similar configuration process affecting hardware that just does not work for your Window version.
Basically, restoring the registry is very easy and straightforward. All you need to do is boot your PC system, launch your backup software, and restore the system state. However, if your computer has suffered a problem that caused the loss of the registry, it will probably not boot properly. So you must get your computer into sufficient shape to run your backup software. That would mean reinstalling the operating system, repairing the system with the Recovery Console, repairing the system with the ERD, or if you are lucky enough, booting into the Safe mode.
Once your operating system is up and running, open your backup software and do the restore. I recommend a registry cleaner called RegCure to perform the backup. In RegCure, you can just press the backup/restore button and the software itself will do the rest. Make sure your backed up registry and any files you are restoring is properly restored. It is also a good idea to go to backup log tab and select a detailed.
To restore with the ERD, start your PC system with the Window CD. At the welcome setup screen, press R to repair the operating system. Press R again to repair from the ERD. Then follow the prompts to perform a repair with the ERD. Select the appropriate menu choice to specify the files you want to repair.
